- Braille Displays: Sometimes called
tactile displays, these devices consist of a row of cells with small,
movable pins. Each cell has 6 or 8 pins made of metal or plastic and can
represent any Braille character. As part of an electromechanical
linkage, these pins move up and down to provide a tactile representation
of characters as they appear on the video display of the source system:

- Braille Embossers: These devices
are similar to conventional impact printers, embossing Braille into
paper or sheets of plastic. We sell a variety, including:
- Index Basic: Made by Index Braille AB of Sweden, this line of embossers work with tractor fed paper and are known for high-speed output.
- Index Everest: Also made by Index Braille, this sheet-fed printer uses interpoint for double sided embossing.
- Braille Notetakers and Accessible
PDAs: These devices are often similar to Braille displays but they
are smaller and meant to be portable. They also have a keyboard for user
input. Like other, conventional, digital assistants, they have
independent memory and a computer to allow the user to store, retrieve
and manipulate data, such as documents, schedules or contact lists:

- BrailleNote and VoiceNote: Made by Pulse Data, this line of assistants offers different keyboard layouts and many advantages over conventional laptops or pocket computers.
- BRAILLEX ELba: Made by F.H. Papenmeier GmbH of Germany this line of Braille assistants is very compatible with both Linux and Microsoft operating systems
- Maestro: An HP iPAQ Pocket PC made accessible by VisuAide using a text-to-speech technology adapted application and a tactile keyboard membrane over the PDA touch screen.
- Type 'n Speak: This assistant from Freedom Scientific has a standard keyboard and voice output.
- Braille Translators: These are software tools that convert digital documents and files--such as e-mail, Web pages, spreadsheets, databases and word processing--from a conventional alphabet and set of characters to the Braille alphabet and characters. In combination with tactile displays or Braille printers, this makes computers more useful:

- Optical Character Recognition:
Abbreviated as OCR, optical character recognition refers to a system of
hardware and software that scans printed text from paper and translates
the resulting images into a form that the computer can manipulate--for
example, into ASCII-standard text.
- Kurzweil 1000: The pioneer of OCR, Kurzweil Educational Systems, makes this software.
- ScannaR: The ScannaR is a flat-bed scanner that will scan any text document and read it back to you in seconds.
- Screen Readers and Magnifiers:
Screen readers are complex and powerful programs recite and describe
digital text and objects like dialog boxes, e-mail and operating system
events. They also often provide alternatives to using the mouse to drive
the computer. They often used to make graphical interfaces and operating
systems accessible to people with blindness or low vision. Screen
magnifiers are software that enlarges the text and images displayed by a
computer. They also provide high contrast color schemes and other forms
of visual enhancement. There are often used by people in poor lighting
or with visual impairments.:
- Window-eyes: Made by GW Micro, Inc., this screen reader supports many versions of Microsoft Windows and is known for stability.
- Zoomtext Magnifier: Made by AI Squared, Inc., this industry leading magnifier makes Microsoft Windows more accessible.
- Zoomtext Screen Reader: Also made by AI Squared, this combines their screen magnifier with a powerful screen reader.
- Lunar: Made by Dolphin Oceanic, Ltd. this screen magnifer also can be purchased with a screen recitation featrures.
- Hal: Made by Dolphin Oceanic, Ltd. this is an intelligent screen access tool for visually impaired computer users through speech and Braille.
- Supernova: Built by Dolphin Oceanic, this screen reader combines magnifier, reader and Braille translation functions into one package.
- BigShot: Made by AI Squared, this screen reader, while lacking some of features of Zoomtext, is inexpensive and can support older versions of Microsoft Windows.
- Speech Synthesizers: This is hardware
designed to recite and describe digital text, documents or computer
operating system events in an artificial voice. We offer support for
many old and new models, including:
- DECtalk Express: Originally made by the Digital Equipment Corporation, many of these speech synthesis devices are still in circulation and still supported by used hardware vendors, including us.
- DoubleTalk: Made by RC Systems, Inc. these synthesizers are compatible with Apple and Microsoft Windows.
- Triple-Talk: Made by Access Solutions, Inc<. this speech synthesis device works with USB and PCI.
- Video Magnifiers: These systems often
use a video camera and display to enlarge physical objects, like books
pages to aid people with visual impairments.
- PocketViewer: Superb full color picture quality allows you to read maps, view photographs, illustrations and three dimensional objects while on the go.
